Poland
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
281 cover   image1944 (Aug. 12), Clandestine Scouts Cover, square stampless cover, addressed from Ewa Rojek (backflap) to Jozef Rojek, carried clandestinely by the Polish Scouts; violet "Harcerska Poczta" (Scout Mail) handstamp with Scouts' symbol at top right, matching boxed "Cenzura/Harcerska" (Scout Censor) mark lower left with straightline 12 Srp. 1944 date handstamped at lower right horizontal file fold along censor's mark, but a remarkable find, Very Fine, ex Fukui.

Soon after invading Poland, Hitler outlawed Scouting, which went underground in defiance of the law; covers such as this conveyed messages—carried at the risk of death—"through the ghettoes and sewers of Poland under the nose of the enemy." (Entwistle, Boy Scout and Girl Guide Stamps of the World, p. 69.)
