The only recorded example of this War Tax postal card essay. Ex-Campbell.
UPSS $1,500 for envelopes.


The U.S. Congress passed a law calling for the increase of some postal rates in order to help with the war effort. Accordingly, a few trial surcharges were produced at Mt. Hope. However, it was eventually determined that, since the Canal Zone postal system was not under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Postmaster General, the tax was not required and the stamps were never issued.

Three U.S. Army Martin bombers made a courtesy trip from France Field to San Jose, Costa Rica, under the leadership of Major Follet Bradley (1890-1952), the France Field Commanding officer. Postmaster Gerald D. Bliss officially designated Bradley as an Airmail pilot and authorized him to carry the mail.

Two aviators were killed in when their planes crashed at Buenos Aires, Argentina. Some covers were serviced individually by various crew members. On their round the world flight in their plane Nungessor & Coli pilots Dieudonne Costes and Jose Maria Le Brix stopped in the Canal Zone to meet with Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh. They then flew via Barranquilla to Caracas before returning to the Canal Zone. The inscription on the reverse reads "This letter arrived on the 17th of January 1928, at the city of Maracay, via the French plane 'Nungesser Coli', piloted by the daring aviators Dieudonne Costs and Jose Maria Le Brix and to Caracas the 18th of the same month, by automobile. Roessler, franked (as all) with 5¢ Canadian postage, underfranked for Air service to the Canal Zone, but all received markings indicating Airmail service was given; mailed from Montreal March 13, 1929 with Mar. 17 Cristobal receiver below, Very Fine.


The longest regularly flown air route in the world, 3000 miles. Operated by three airline companies: Canadian Colonial to Newark, New Jersey, Pitcairn Aviation onwards to Miami, and Pan American Airways to the Canal Zone.

1438 cover 1929.0316 image1929 (Mar. 16), Eaker Attempted Flight Cover Group, signed, pair of south- and northbound covers signed by Eaker as well as two letters concerning the flight from the postmaster in Texas and the Deputy Postmaster in Washington D.C., Fine to Very Fine and extremely rare. A small number of covers were carried on the southbound flight and 27 covers on the northbound flight, of which six were signed by Eaker; the southbound flight signed is not reported.


US Army pilot Captain Ira C. Eaker attempted a non-stop dawn-to-dusk flight from the United States to the Canal Zone in the Boeing pursuit plane "The Panama American". Bad weather forced a landing and overnight stay in Managua, Nicaragua. Eaker arrived at France Field on March 17. He departed Cristobal on March 18 in an attempt to fly non-stop to Brownsville, Texas. This flight was also interrupted by a weather-forced landing in Tampico, Mexico. Eaker arrived in Brownsville on March 20.

1439 cover 1937.1211 image1937 (Dec. 11), Coco Solo Flight Cover from Cristobal to Compton, Calif., signed, near-pristine cover franked by Canal Zone #C10 tied by Cristobal wavy line slogan cancel with flight information and signature of crew member Frank L. Swain (1915 - 2011; naval aviator 1936-40 and Army Air Corps 1940-42) at left, Very Fine.


This was, at the time, the Army's greatest long distance mass aircraft movement with 14 big patrol planes flying non-stop from San Diego, California, to Coco Solo, Canal Zone. The flight was 3,080 miles long and scheduled for 26 hours. 98 officers and men were involved. Lt. Commander b. E. Grow was in command of the flight.
