1230 cover 53e image1918, 2¢ vermilion & black, overprint reading up, type IV, booklet pair, left stamp with overprint omitted (Scott 53e), with 1911 surcharge 10¢ on 13¢ gray (#36), tied by "Culebra/C.Z." c.d.s. in violet on Mar. 10, 1919 Registered buff cover to Balboa (3.11), showing matching "Registered/No. 1355" framed handstamp adjacent, the vermilion color of the 2¢ stamp is a little faded, otherwise Fine to Very Fine, and the unique use of this exceptionally rare variety on cover, ex Gilbert N. Plass collection, with 1969 A.P.S. certificate.

There are only two recorded examples of the 2¢ booklet pane with the "Canal Zone" overprint omitted in the left vertical row. One pane still remains intact, while the other pane was separated into a block of four and pair. The pair is that on the cover offered here. Described and illustrated in Plass, Brewster, and Salz, Canal Zone Stamps (Canal Zone Study Group, 1986), pp. 276-277.

The Taft Agreement was abrogated with effect from June 1, 1924. Overprinted Panama stamps were withdrawn from sale on June 30 and were no longer valid for postage after August 31. Fewer than five covers franked with the Balboa type V overprints have been recorded.

In 1932, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing was unable to supply the necessary 3¢ booklets, so a supply was made locally in December from available sheets of stamps. There are six booklet panes recorded, which include four of the panes in two intact booklets.
