On January 5, 1951, the United States & Portugal signed a Mutual Defense Assistance
Agreement similar to those between the United States and other NATO countries. On February 2, a United States Military Assistance Advisory Group was formally established in Portugal, and a Defense Agreement was signed at Lisbon on September 6, 1951.
Military Assistance Advisory Groups consisted of United States military advisors sent to other countries to assist in the training of conventional armed forces and facilitate military aid. (Image)
