405 cover 35 image1859, 10¢ green, type V, Illegal use (Scott 35), tied by one of two strikes of a Petaluma, Cal. c.d.s., Feb 18 (1862) with a bold manuscript "Due 10" on a cover to Roxbury, Me.; cover slightly nicked at the lower right, Fine to Very Fine. A very late—and unaccepted—use.

Beginning in the summer of 1861, stamps of the 1851-60 Issues were no longer valid for postage. Stanley Ashbrook—in a letter accompanying this cover—believed this to be the reason for the 10¢ due, though he admits the possibility that it was simply an overweight letter.
