4118 O 389 image1911, 3¢ deep violet, S.L. watermark, the "Orangeburg" coil (Scott 389), an attention-grabber with deep, rich color and razor-sharp detail; fresh and sound with a wavy line machine cancel, a Very Fine example of this rare stamp, Scott values this item in the grade of Fine, with 1973 P.F. certificate.
Scott $10,000.

The Orangeburg coil was manufactured in 1911 by the Post Office Department solely for the use by the Bell Pharmaceutical Company. The 3¢ coil stamps were used on mail to send samples of the companies products to physicians. Because of the large amount of mail, they were processed by the Orangburg, New York Post Office by use of their first-class cancelling machine. Due to the three dimensional aspects of the contents of the envelopes containing samples, the stamps used on these envelopes often became damaged. Many if not most of the surviving examples are faulty to some extent. Sound examples are much rarer and command hefty premiums
