Also includes a second 10c value tied on piece by a strike of the captured British Army Signal Corps canceller of the same date. An outstanding example of this rare private issue.


Rommel's Africa Corps took control of the Libyan Mediterranean port city of Tobruk from the British on June 21, 1942.

350 cover 1-2, 4-6, 7A-10, A1-2 imageFezzan, 1943, Pair of First Day Covers from Sebha to Ghadames (Sassone 1-2, 4-6, 7A-10, A1-2), franked with Provisional First Issue Surcharges nearly complete: missing only the relatively common 1fr on 10c but including, instead of the "normal" 5fr on 50c overprinted in red, the exceedingly rare red brown overprint (Sassone 7A) - priced at €18,000 mint and unpriced used; all tied by by "R.F. Sebha/16 MAI 1943/Fezzan" rimless c.d.s. and both covers backstamped Ghadames/R.F. Fezzan" on 25 May; a few minor tones, otherwise Very Fine. Both covers signed A. Diena & Cotta, one also signed Roumet and one unidentified, the other also signed En. Diena and on unidentified.


A TRULY SPECTACULAR MATCHED PAIR OF COVERS USING THE FIRST PROVISIONAL ISSUES ON THE DAY OF ISSUE.

Quantities issued of the three high values are 10f on 1.25L - 181, 20fr on1.75L - 81, and 50fr on 75c - 79. No figures on the 5fr on 50c with red brown overprint are publish. Sassone prices just the 50fr on 75c at €30,000!
