1169 E 40L1E imageThe Unique City Despatch Post, 1842, 3¢ black on grayish, die essay on bond paper (Scott 40L1E), 28 x 33mm mounted on 40 x 44mm card, with apostrophe in cents and the side ornaments differ from the issued stamp, tiny faint toned spot, still Very Fine, illustrated in the October 2004 issue of "The Penny Post" (p. 12) and in Volume III of The Lyons Identifier (Addenda p. 53), unique, ex-Caspary & Middendorf (https://www.rfrajola.com/catalogs/rcfnp4.pdf; lot 477).


Because it is an essay of the very first adhesive stamp used in the United States, it is the very first US essay produced and an important philatelic item.
