Thompson straightlines in fancy frame of eagle, stars and olive branches, two strikes of each on reverse of 1855 folded letter datelined February 11 1855 (at end) and sent by J.N. Thompson from Flat Lick P.O., Claiborne Parish LA to family in Chesterfield S.C. "in haste" as he had previously sent them the wrong address for correspondence and wanted them to be aware of the error before they sent any future correspondence to him

this fancy cancel is identical to the ones used by postmasters in Mechanicsburg IN (1861) and Upper Dublin PA (1852), and similar to the one used at Kingsessing PA that were used to cancel stamps.
J.Q. Thompson (c.1830-1901) served in the Confederate Army, Very Fine strikes, ¢. Unique; this fancy cancel is identical to the ones used by postmasters in Mechanicsburg IN (1861) and Upper Dublin PA (1852). This handstamp was made for postmasters. This must have been a postmark and sent free as, just like the covers from the aforementioned towns, there are no other postal markings on covers sent from those locations. I received your letter of the 3rd and how lost half a day in ransacking the books of the Bank & Circuit & County Courts of this county to find a judgment against you.", second with negative "10" in circle with negative stars, full strike of blue "Huntsville Al. Morgan, Supt., stellar, full strike tying #11A to piece; stamp with top right corner torn away and a diagonal crease, but still a Very Fine strike of this rare cancel, with 2022 P.F. certificate, plus 1941 typed opinion by Ashbrook.


The excerpt from Ashbrook's letter notes this appears in the 1854 list of Post Offices. The Institute was destroyed by fire on Dec. 9, 1855, and was later moved to Lexington. Ashbrooke states, "The darn thing looks too good to be bad…."
