47 cover 2 image1853, Queen Maria II, 25r blue (Scott 2), absolutely huge-margined stamp paying the to-the-pier rate on folded address sheet from Setubal (St. Ubes); privately carried to Lisbon (28/9/54 blue receiver at lower left), and then sent "Per Steamer" to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; the stamp clean with a face-free numeral cancel; file folds and some ink erosion in the address, otherwise Very Fine and a real find. Stamped mail to Brazil prior to about 1860 is howlingly rare. Ex- Washburne.

A gem for the connoisseur, ex González-Garcia, Gonçalves, "Cascais", Washburne, with 2004 Paolo Dias certificate.

49 cover 4 image1853, Queen Maria II, 100r lilac (Scott 4), single on Oct. 10, 1855 folded letter from Vizeu to Lisboa (10.12); stamp with rich deep color, full to large margins, and canceled by "112" barred circle with matching boxed "10 10/VIZEU/55" alongside; arrival c.d.s. on reverse; slight browning as common for the period. Very Fine single franking paying the quadruple domestic rate. A spectacular centerpiece for any Portuguese exhibit. Less than six single frankings of the 1853 issue top value are believed to exist, the majority of used 100r stamps coming from fiscal documents. Ex- Dr. Trincao, Washburne, with 1994 R.P.S.L. certificate.

54 cover 11 var. image1858, King Pedro V (curled hair), 25r rose, private zig-zag rouletting (Scott 11 var.), used as a seal across the flap of a blue folded address sheet sent from Lisbon to Porto; address side with Lisboa 20/5/62 postmark and "1" in circular grid postmark, the stamp on reverse tied by numeral grid cancel and Porto May 22 receiver; stamp with wildly askew left margin and naturally torn horizontally upon opening, Fine to Very Fine, a stellar item. Ex- Washburne.


Portugal was late to perforating, with the first experiments carried out by private commercial forms. The zig-zags seen here were used by Eisenach & Co. of Lisbon, beginning around 1860.
