801 E 1139-1144 E image1960, American Credo Series, Designer's Original Artwork (Scott 1139-1144 E), an archive of preliminary sketches, drawings and mock-ups by designer, Frank P. Conley; more than 40 pieces in all, including 1.-2.) two sheets, each with stamp size pen & ink drawings similar to Scott 139-E9, one of them with two different B. Franklin designs, the other with a different G. Washington quote and a proposed design for an Franklin Roosevelt stamp. Also included is 3.) a stamp size pencil drawing of a "plate" of 12 stamps, ten of the positions filled in, four of them being issued quotes for Jefferson, Key, Lincoln and Henry, the others for Stephen Vincent Benèt, John Dickinson, Wendell Phillips, F.D.R., Daniel Webster and Woodrow Wilson. There are also 4.-7.) four large black & white mock-ups, about 180x105 mm, for Jefferson, Key, Lincoln and Henry, all inscribed and signed, "Finished drawing of Credo stamp. Later redone for neatness. Symbol subsequently changed. Frank P. Conley, 1959". The balance is made up of 18 preliminary sketches on tracing paper of partial designs and symbols, four of them signed, and 20 photographic images of various sketches of symbols and layouts, three of them signed. Fully imaged online.
