1858 230-245 image1893, Columbian Exposition Issue, Designer Alfred S. Major, small assortment of ephemera related to Major, who was at the American Bank Note Co. from 1880 until his death in 1929, beginning as a designer (and credited with designing all 16 Columbian values) and eventually working his way up to Department head and, finally Vice-President, in which capacity he toured the world on behalf of the company. Included is a 1925 U.S. Passport which lists his Foreign address as Bradbury Wilkinson Co. (his U.S. address was New York), with stamps in the United Kingdom (twice) and Italy; also an ornate "Commercial Label" for "Alfred Major, Designer and Lithographic Engraver, St. Louis, Mo."; and a small scrap book, mainly with clippings of various newspaper Death Notices and Obituaries, etc., and stuck-down examples of a 1¢, a 2¢ and two 5¢ Columbians.
