Military-/War-Related Covers
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
1839 cover 4 image1944 (Aug. 2), Censored cover from RP Clark to Stanfield, Oregon, franked by two 1940 2d King George VI Pictorials, each tied by double-ring "Pitcairn Island/2 AUG 44/Post Office" postmark; reverse with blue boxed "H.M.S. Bounty 1789/'Pitcairn Island'/[ship]/Hands Across the Sea" handstamp; backflap sealed with stamp selvage strips, right side (back; left front) sealed by white Censor's tape with mimeographed "Opened by Examiner/Pitcairn Island." and initialed "DS", Fine to Very Fine.

From June to August 1944, a small covert military force of US and New Zealand personnel were on the island, and mail was subject to censorship using this label. Only a small number of covers are known with this censorship, making this commercial item very rare indeed.
