Diefenderfer and addressed to his wife in Fullerton PA, franked by 5¢ Beacon (#C11) tied by "Pago Pago Samoa May 15, 1931" double-circle datestamp, second is signed A.E. Jennings to the same addressee and franked with a 2¢ Pulaski (#690) tied by the "Pago Pago Samoa Jun 4 1931" double-circle datestamp, third also signed Jennings and has a 2¢ Washington Coil (#599) tied by Apia circular datestamp addressed to Cleveland, Very Fine trio.


Paul Diefenderfer was an official with the American Samoa Education Department, Swains Island is a tiny atoll, and the site of a privately owned coconut plantation, some one and a half miles long and a mile wide, lying 200 miles north of Tutuila, American Samoa. While it is geographically one of the Tokelau Islands Group, and located about a hundred miles from the three main islands, it is administrated by American Samoa. In 1925 the owners of Swains, the Jennings family, and the local inhabitants, petitioned the U.S. Congress to allow them to come under American protection. It never had its own post office, and all mail was carried to and from Swains is routed through either Pago Pago or Apia, Western Samoa

308 cover 1943.01.05 imagePrisoner of War from Wake Island, 1943, Executive Office of the President Bureau of the Budget penalty envelope, censored with 30¢ Transport franking and Japanese receiving chop, envelope tells a sad story of a wife communicating through the International Red Cross with her husband, he was one of two civilians taken prisoner by the Japanese following the attack on Dec 8 1941 (Dec 7 in Hawaii), plans were made to evacuate Wake Island, Hevenor, a civil service employee, failed to leave on Dec 8th or during a lone Navy rescue flight just prior to surrender of the island to the Japanese, he would spend the war in the Zentsuji War Prison Camp in Japan, commenting on his failure to make the flights, an Army Commented, "It struck me as a rather drastic lesson in the wisdom of punctuality", fascinating postal history, Fine to Very Fine.
