7 cover Earhart 1938 imageGimbels Amelia Earhart Round the World Flight Anniversary, 1938, Type 2 (with stars) used with #C23, tied by "N. Oakland Calif. May 21, 1938 Air-Mail Saves Time" slogan cancel, typed address to business promoter and close friend E.H. Dimity (after Earhart disappeared, Dimity founded the Amelia Earhart Foundation), ONLY THREE POSTMARKED SOUVENIRS OF EARHARTS ROUND THE WORLD FLIGHT ARE KNOWN TO EXIST. Dimity saved at least two covers from loss when Earhart's plane disappeared. He had wanted to have some fun with the aviatrix by confronting her upon the successful completion of her journey with one piece of mail (probably addressed to himself) that was identical to the mail she was carrying and declare that the mail was faster than she. Dimity retained the unique cover after her plane disappeared during her second attempt. He likely retained this cover as well, had it signed by friend and fellow pilot Roscoe Turner and Postmaster Nellie Donohoe, and then mailed it to himself on May 21 1938, the one year anniversary of the start of her second attempt, Dimity is highy likely to be the source of the envelope mailed to Earhart's husband George P Putnam also on May 21 1938 that sold at public auction in 1995 for $15,000 - that cover is identical to the cover offered here but lacks the additional signatures, faint staining does not detract from this fabulous cover, a striking piece with wonderful history, the lot also includes a matched pair of covers flown from Detroit to Cleveland Over Lake Erie May 14, 1929 (AAMC 27E27) with "Amelia Earhart Special Pilot" handstamp cachets, one with 2c Aeronautics (Scott 649) tied by boxed purple "Railway Express Agency Received May 14, 1929 Superintendent Detroit Mich." and other with 5c Aeronautics (Scott 650) tied by boxed purple "Railway Express Agency Inc. Received May 14, 1929 General Mail Cleveland, Ohio." handstamped cachet, blue-green or purple commemorative and purple or blue green "Air Express" handstamp cachets, both with National Air Races labels and large white or yellow Air Shipment receipt tied by boxed cancel and with large commemorative handstamp cachets, and four covers from the U.S.S. Colorado and one from the U.S.S. Lexington that searched for Earhart -- one of the U.S.S. Colorado covers has the original letter from a son to his father that reads in part, "…. This is a cover for the search of Amelia E. … This is the second day out from Honolulu going south. We will cross the line about two days later. The Colorado is the base of the search. Every plane ship will refuel from us … I can't tell you the ship's destination for two or three months yet or neither can the Capt…", plus three small photos of Earhart, and a mailed advertising foldout cover lettersheet for Gimbels sale of Earhart Round-The-World Flight covers - $2.50 for unsigned and $5 for signed, Fine to Very Fine.

Both this lettersheet and the cover offered are illustrated in Jon Krupnick's "Pan American's Pacific Pioneers The Rest of the Story" p. 543
