299 O 389 image1911, 3¢ deep violet, S.L. watermark, the "Orangeburg" coil (Scott 389), with robust color and proof-like detail; fresh with wavy line cancel, Fine to Very Fine, an attractive example of this sought-after rarity, without the faults that normally plague this issue, one of the choicest of the few sound examples extant, with 2018 P.S.E. certificate.
Scott $10,000 as Fine.

In 1911 a pharmaceutical company in Orangeburg, New York placed a small order of the new 3¢ coil stamps to send some samples. These stamps were considered by collectors at the time to be inferior because they had not just one, but two straight edges at top and bottom. It wasn't realized until later the importance of these experimental stamps to philately. Out of this supply originated what became one of the great rarities of philately…the "Orangeburg" coil.
