1851 Issue
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
428 O 5 image1851, 1¢ blue, type I (Scott 5), glowingly fresh in robust color a near-complete detail; margins wide at sides capturing portions of adjoining stamps, top and bottom just graze or clip plumes at right, top still capturing guide line and dot; centrally struck seven-bar cancel light and unobtrusive, Very Fine, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, a rare stamp, especially graded. PSE's Population Report notes just seven stamps graded, two at 80, with just two higher at 90J, with 2017 P.S.E. certificate graded VF 80.
SMQ VF 80; $150,000.
Scott $55,000.
Estimate $80,000 - 120,000

The 1851 Franklin's numerous types arise from the multi-step, manual production process. First there was a complicated five-step evolution from original die, to master relief (Ashbrook's term, reprinted in Neinken, page 29), to lay down, to working transfer roll, to the final steel printing plate. Relief trimming or a short transfer could occur anywhere during the process, while the final plate could also be altered by erasure of outer parts of the design (or an entire cliché in rare cases). Each of these actions, along with recutting a worn plate, account for the multitude of listed and minor types.

Type I shows the complete design as found on the original die, with top and bottom lines, scrolls, plumes, and side ornaments all complete. It is found just once on the plate of 200, at position 7R1E.

429 O 6 image1851, 1¢ blue, type Ia (Scott 6), an A-1 Ia, immaculate with proof-like impression and jaw-dropping color, magnificently centered and showing off full ornamentation; all with a light postmark, Extremely Fine to Superb, a remarkable example for the most discerning collector, one of only four stamps at this grade in PSE's Population Report, with just two grading higher at 98, with 2019 P.S.E. certificate graded XF-SUP 95.
SMQ XF-SUP 95; $47,500.
Scott $9,500.
Estimate $35,000 - 50,000

The 1851 1¢ Type Ia is identifiable by its combination of a complete bottom design with its top ornaments and outer lines partly cut away. It also has a constant plate flaw, a horizontal white line directly under the "U" of "UNITED STATES" (though this is seen also on other types). It is found only on the bottom row of Plate 4 (Relief "F"), the last plate used for the imperforate issue and introduced around February 1857 (Neinken, page 259).

Only 18 positions from the sheet of 200 are Type Ia.
