392 o 294a image1901, 1¢ Pan-American, center inverted (Scott 294a), a gorgeous stamp with bright color, clean paper and an exceedingly light mute oval cancel; "defective and repaired" per the accompanying certificate; Scott notes "there are no known fault-free [used] examples"—and this appears much cleaner and sounder than the certificate suggests, Fine to Very Fine, a winning example of this popular and sought-after invert, double-signed Brettl BPP, with 1981 P.F. certificate. There were approximately 200 examples of this stamp released by the Post Office department, some were overprinted "Specimen"; approximately 100 examples are known without the Specimen overprint, thus the example offered here is among the scarcest stamps in United States philately

394 296a image1901, 4¢ Pan-American, center inverted (Scott 296a), o.g., hinged, fresh with clean impression and rich colors, three nicely balanced margins; reperforated at left, Fine to Very Fine appearance. The sheet was discovered stuck down to cardboard, resulting in most known examples with thins, creases or no gum, as Scott notes, this was a Special Printing and not regularly issued, making it one of the toughest of all US inverts—especially this pretty, with 2019 P.S.E. certificate.
