1851 Issue
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
816 o 5 image1851, 1¢ dark blue, type I (Scott 5), position 7R1E, four clear gigantic margins all around showing every glorious bit of the type with portions of left and bottom stamps, in addition this stamp is in the rare dark blue shade which Ashbrook noted in his book is "…so rare it is not priced at all in the catalogue. This stamp in the dark blue color is indeed a very rare stamp. I recall seeing but one.", black New York large slug in circle cancel, used on circular mail; tiny corner creases at top, a small sealed tear at bottom and small thins, Very Fine to Extremely Fine centering, illustrated in Ashbrook and National Philatelic Museum 1851-57 handbook. Scott does not price this unique example in the "dark blue" shade. A significant rarity which would grace the pages of the finest of collections, less than 100 examples of this stamp are thought to exist making it one of the rarest of the US stamps and a key part to any U.S. collection of classical issues, ex. Ashbrook, Bacon, Ward, Superior, with 1957 P.F. and 2018 P.S.E. certificate.
Scott $67,500 for "blue".
Estimate $40,000 - 60,000

During the production of this stamp, it was clear that an entire pane of the full design wouldn't fit on the plate, so the existing transfers were erased, the plate was turned upside down and the sheet was restarted. As this second attempt progressed it was clear the full design would not fit on the sheet, so the design was reduced and the remaining stamps were transferred with reduced design. This is the only stamp of this issue from position 7 on the right side of the early state of plate 1 to retain the full type characteristics and also have the double impression of the first erased image. Illustrated in Ashbrook. This is the stamp Ashbrook was describing in his book and signed Ashbrook and photographed as Figure 15 X in Ashbrook's amazing tome, see Ashbrook, 1938, Volume 1, page 119 (figure 15X). Ashbrook mentions "I believe it was used only on printed circulars as I have never seen its use on a Drop Letter." The large slug handstamp is rare and only used during part of this rare types period (7R1E) for a few months according to Ashbrook
