327 /o   imageGerman States, Substantial Mint and Used Collection, 1849-1920. High catalog, surprisingly complete collection of many hundreds, including duplication, mounted, often two or three deep, on Scott Specialty album pages; loaded with $500-and-up stamps throughout, with 10 of the States cataloging at least $5,000; especially strong in Bavaria (two used #1), Brunswick, Lubeck, Oldenburg and Württemberg (used #6 (3), 12 (3), 18 (4), 33, 40 (5), 46 and 53 (unused & used); also includes nice Baden, Bremen (plus a small specialized collection with forgeries on quadrille pages), Heligoland, Saxony, Thurn & Taxis, etc. As for condition, it's quite mixed, as almost always, with most of the best having faults of of one kind or another, though the majority of those are at least Fine appearing, and there are plenty of F-VF $100-and-up stamps, plus a good number of expert signatures and certificates. The huge catalog value and the large number of $500-and-up stamps makes this a most unusual lot. Please see our website, where we have scanned more than 20 of the most relevant pages.

328   imageGerman States, Comprehensive Mint and Used Collection, 1849-1923. A lovely collection, beautifully mounted in two leather-bound albums, carefully arranged on black pages and written up by hand in white ink; one volume is Bavaria, the other volume the rest of the States. The Bavaria volume is said to have won a silver medal at "Ruhrposta Duisburg 1949" (the award certificate is included). That said, the collection was apparently put together on a limited budget, as there are only a few stamps in the $300-plus catagory that don't have have unobtrusive flaws or minimal margins, which were carefully enhanced in mounting; however, there are still plenty of useful stamps in the $50-and-up singles category—the catalog value is undoubtedly well over $50,000—and the albums themselves, aside from a few alterations made by a subsequent owner, are a pleasure to behold.
Estimate $2,500 - 3,500. (Image) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4) (Image5) (Image6) (Image7) (Image8) (Image9) (Image10) (Image11) (Image12) (Image13) (Image14) (Image15) (Image16) (Image17) (Image18) (Image19) (Image20) (Image21) (Image22) (Image23) (Image24) (Image25) (Image26)

329 /o   imageGermany, Impressive Mint and Used Collection, 1859-1973. Comprehensive, nearly intact collection of several thousand stamps, including duplication, in a bulging Scott Specialty album (4½" of pages in a 3" binder!). Starts with Thurn & Taxis and North German Confederation and includes all issues of the Empire, the Third Reich, the Federal Republic, Berlin, the French & Soviet Zones and the German Democratic Republic; probably 99% complete for the period with the early Federal Republic & Berlin issues being mostly used and everything else perhaps 50-50 mint (hinged) and used (some both mint & used); overall condition, with a few exceptions early and among the Semi-Postal souvenir sheets, is just about all F-VF. A great collection with which to begin a collection of this popular area.

330 /o   imageGerman Colonies, & Post Offices Abroad, Valuable Mint and Used Collection, 1884-1917. Comprehensive collection of several hundred, including duplication, on Scott Specialty album pages; highlights are too numerous to mention, but suffice to say that there are probably well over 100 stamps cataloging $100-and-up, including many upwards of $500; and while there are some problems on most of the best stamps (an unused Kiauchau #32a is regummed, and several certified 1900 Tientsin Provisionals are less than Fine, including an unused 30pf with a 1968 P.F. certificate), there are many more $100-$500 stamps that are F-VF, including lots of British Occupation issues. Overall, a very interesting and worthwhile lot. Please see our website, where we have scanned nearly the entire collection.

Neatly mounted on Scott Specialty album pages, including minor duplication; missing #19, the rare 1947 surcharges on the first printing of the definitives, and the two souvenir sheets, and nothing else; additionally, there are a few varieties scattered here and there (93b used, 177 inverted overprint (Mi €30); sets are sometimes mixed mint & used, though a good number of stamps are present both mint & used; a few examples include #16 both mint & used, 36 used, 37 mint, 38 used (signed Bloch), all 1926-50 Semi-Postals are mint (LH, B15 regummed) and C12 is used; condition, with very few exceptions, is clean and F-VF.
