TRUE CLASSICS, THESE ESSAYS ARE AMONG THE RAREST AND MOST HIGHLY PRIZED PIECES IN ALL OF RYUKYU PHILATELY.

In 1949, following the production of the second printing of the first definitives (Scott 1-7), Ryukyu Command secretly planned to devalue the B Yen. With that in mind, they wanted a way to avoid having to scrap there entire stock of stamps. Accordingly, the Japan Printing Bureau was asked to devise a means of alternation whereby the then-current stock would be easily distinguishable from its predecessor, the first printing (Scott 1a-7a). Overprinting was suggested, and a set of sheets submitted to the JPB, where they were treated with a burelage overlays of blue, green and pink dots, and returned to the authorities. Ultimately, however, the devaluation never came about.
