Sieger 454 Cb; €5,000 ($5,330).
Michel €4,000 ($4,260).
Estimate $1,500 - 2,000

About 175 pieces of uncanceled mail intended for the return trip had been placed in a metal container and, consequently, was able to survive the fire. When the container was recovered, mail to U.S. addresses was forwarded to the Foreign Section in the New York Post Office, which sent the items to the respective addressees’ Postmaster with a request to secure a registered receipt. Those with foreign addresses were canceled and returned by ship to Europe. But since this cover was franked with German stamps, it did not fall under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Post Office and a U.S. cancel could not be applied. Authorities therefore decided to treat this mail as packet boat mail posted at sea
