2884   imageAfghanistan, 1880 (Mar. 28), Second Afghan War, cover from Bala Hissar to Abergele, North Wales, ex-Sandbach correspondence franked India ½a and 4a stamps tied by pen strokes and indistinct barred cancellers. Fine strike of the 'FIELD P.O./Mar 28/No. 12' on reverse with Bombay transit and Abergele receiver. Long letter headlined Bala Hissar-Kabul-23rd March, 1880 describing local events, viz. '…General Vaughan is the correspondent of the 'Times' here. He is a Major-General with nothing to do, so he came up here as correspondent…I do not see how I can be home…they say all our enemies here are coming in to make terms with us…and I cannot leave this battery while it is on service.'.

Message on reverse reads 'Copy of State Telegram sent to you today by Brigadier General Denis de Vitre, R.A./ Sibi 13. Crossed frontier yesterday and assumed command RA of S.A.F. Force. 2886   imageAfghanistan, 1881 (Feb. 19), Second Afghan War, Indian 1½a postal card to England, uprated with ½a stamp, which is tied by barred diamond cancel and Kandahar Feb. 19 circular datestamp, adjacent Bombay Feb. 28 transit postmark, manuscript inscription reading "Via Brindisi", Very Fine.

The Battle of Kandahar in September 1880, brought a close to the Second Anglo-Afghan War. However the British troops evacuated Kandahar until April, 1881.

Cover is a ½a Indian postal envelope with added 4a green cancelled Rawalpindi duplex cancels. Bombay transit, regular London receiver plus scarce boxed 'A-9/LONDON/MY 18/81' in red.

Letter headed 'Fir Hill, Murree/The Residency of General Sir Michael Biddulph.' Long descriptions of travel on horseback, scenery, rest houses filled with soldiers on the route. (…if I had only had a comfortable saddle I should thoroughly have enjoyed the trip…We rode up about 5,500 feet from Pindi and had a splendid range of snow hills in front of us…). Cover is an Indian ½a blue postal envelope with added 4a. green stamp tied Murree duplex cancels. Receiver on front. Piece of back flap torn away when opened.

Boxed 'PRESENT LOCATION UNCERTAIN/R.E. (GR) A.P.S.' and unframed 'NOT KNOWN/ R.H. & R.F.A. RECORDS' with numerous manuscript. re-directions on front and reverse. Two 'RETURNED LETTER SECTION/LONDON POSTAL SERVICE' labels hold the envelope together. The 69th was a howitzer battery which was part of the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Corps.

2896 3.693E+11 imageAfghanistan, 1951, King Zahir Shah, autographed card (Scott 369,375,377,379), with four Afghanistan stamps, and depicting the signature of his Majesty Mohammed Zahir Shah, who was the last King of Afghanistan, reigning for four decades, from 1933 until he was ousted by a coup in 1973. Accompanied by an explanatory letter signed by the First Secretary of the Afghan Embassy in Washington, Very Fine.
