9607 cover   imageOct. 1863, Union Soldier's Letter Camp near Van Buren Arkansas, begins with complaints of no outside news leading to rumors being spread, most of which are false, best part begins at the halfway point, "We are encamped on the meanest campground at present that we have ever had. The soil (or rather what ought to be soil) is nothing but a fine quicksand… We heard today that the rebel Genl. Shelby attacked the town of Fayetteville a few days ago and got beautifully whipped, losing 500 men. I hope this is true. Our Gen'l McNeil gave this same rebel a dub drubbing a short time since, and captured all his artillery. Shelby seems to be in a bad streak of luck, but I hope he will never get out of it till an ounce of lead takes him out of it….Direct your letters via Springfield MO instead of Fort Scott.", accompanied by cover with 3¢ 1861 (Scott 65) with geometric cancel and "Springfield MO Oct. 30 (?) 1863" double circle datestamp to Peoria City Iowa, Very Fine letter, see the rest of the letter online.
