10005   image1855 (Mar. 1), "P.O. Business"-endorsed folded letter sheet, sent from New Haven, VT, to Hartford, CT, with straightline "FREE" handstamp with "N.H & Bellows Falls/1/MAR/R.R" postmark alongside, from J. Holbrook to Hartford Postmaster William J. Hamersley; a fascinating one-page letter that appears to be setting up a sting operation, starting, "Will you make up a decoy letter tomorrow P.M., directed to John Foster Jr., Southington Conn., and put in it two $5 gold pieces, and two $5 bills, marking the gold slightly and taking a description of the bills", asking that the money be as obvious as possible and noting that "a certain man" in the New Haven office "overhauls that mail alone"; two vertical file folds, one through the postmark, are of little consequence, Very Fine, a remarkable letter—and the start of a research project.
