The James River and Kanawha Canal, a project originally conceived by George Washington, was originally intended to link the James River near Richmond to the Kanawha River near Charleston, W. Va. and thus to the Ohio River. But after several failures from its beginnings in 1785, and with the emergence of the railroads as a more efficient means of transportation, the idea was finally abandoned and, in 1878, the Richmond & Allegheny Railroad Co. began laying its tracks along the canal's towpaths.
