A railroad yard was built in Thoroughfare, about 12½ miles west of Manassas, to accommodate more than 20,000 Army & National Guard troops and Civil War veterans amassed at Thoroughfare, Gainesville and Lewis Crossing for "readiness" maneuvers that took place in early September of 1904.
