A.J. Morrison was a route agent and R.P.O. clerk from 1869 until 1893, over the years creating many fancy killers, despite the fact that the practice had been contrary to Post Office policy as of December 1881. This lot is an excellent example of one of his fanciest.

A railroad yard was built in Thoroughfare, about 12½ miles west of Manassas, to accommodate more than 20,000 Army & National Guard troops and Civil War veterans amassed at Thoroughfare, Gainesville and Lewis Crossing for "readiness" maneuvers that took place in early September of 1904. Immediately after the maneuvers ended, the yard was dismantled.
