6417 /()   imageAlaska, 1925 Arctic Air Mercy Flight labels, 30 different color combinations, comprising complete sets of 10 each with gold and silver overprinted margins, plus five with unoverprinted margins and five on cream paper; the first two sets are o.g. and mostly never hinged, the others without gum, Very Fine.

These stamps were for a proposed flight to carry serum to counter a diptheria outbreak in Nome. Because of Nome's proximity to the Arctic Circle, the mid-winter flight was considered too dangerous. Ultimately, the serum was despatched by a dog sled relay carried out in five and a half days by 20 "mushers" and about 150 dogs, in temperatures lower than 50° below zero.
