44 PP 116a var imageGreenland, 1931 (Jul 29), von Gronau Transatlantic Flight Following a Northerly Extended Polar Route (AAMC PP 116a var), A lovely four-country franking (Germany, Iceland, Canada, US) on cover addressed to Abendpost, a German-language newspaper in Chicago. Postmarked Berlin (29 July), Reykjavik (11 August), Longlac (1 September) and Chicago (3 September), and bearing red oval "Gronland-Wal" flight cachet, "Scoresbysund" straightline at upper left, and oval "Kolonien Godthaab" shield-and-crown administrative strike in black, along with blue oval Port Harrison Hudson's Bay Company marking in blue. Signed by Von Gronau who, along with three crew members, departed Sylt (List), Germany, on August 9 to examine an alternative trans-Atlantic route from Europe that used a more northerly Arctic route. A Trans-Atlantic, Polar and Experimental cover all in one, Very Fine.

45   imageHong Kong, 1865 (Nov. 21), cover to Hong Kong from New York, a lovely blue folded letter cover sheet franked by 5¢ brown Jefferson (Scott #76) and horizontal pair of 24¢ grayish lilac Washingtons (#78a, left stamp with small tear at bottom left), tied by three circle-of-Vs handstamps. The cover bears the sender's "M.C.G. Witte/94 John St/New-York" handstamp in blue with manuscript "Steamer Cuba" and "via Marseille/Paid" at left. Centrally struck New York British Packet PAID handstamp dated Nov. 21. Red London markings of "London/E/PAID/A/4 DE 65" transit, crayon "1", "1d" local fee and "48" credit handstamps. Addressed to Mssrs. Smith Archer & Co., Hong Kong, with "Hong Kong/A/JA 26/66" receiver in blue on reverse.

Witte was an importer in lower Manhattan, and was a supplier of (or at least an applicant to supply) the New York Naval Yards in the late 1890s. Smith, Archer & Co., with headquarters on Praya East and branches in Canton and Yokohama, were general merchants. In 1870, five years following this mailing, the American barque Benefactress left Yokohama for Smith, Archer for New York carrying tea—so perhaps the relationship between the two companies was fruitful (and all the tea in China wasn't enough for Mr. Witte).

The Cuba celebrated her first birthday at sea with this letter aboard. Constructed in Glasgow for the Cunard line, the 7000-ton, 600-horizontal pair screw steamer was delivered to Liverpool in mid-November 1864, with her maiden voyage to New York December 3.

An eye-catching cover, with proper payment of the 53¢ rate via Marseilles (in effect July 1863 to January 1868) and proper docketing from origin to destination.

Accompanied by 2012 PF certificate stating "It is a genuine usage".

60 ()   imageRussia, 1921, Unissued Khorezm People's Soviet Republic 500R. The unique complete pane of nine.

In 3 x 3 array on unwatermarked wove paper, the full sheet measuring approximately 77-78 x 113 mm, imperforate, with horizontal folds between each row of stamps. Inscribed in ink on reverse, "Khwarezmi postage stamps 500r 1922 issue" and signed "Abd Al-Rahmanov", plus "For remembering", all over an earlier penciled notation about this Khivan issue.

The Khorezm People's Soviet Republic was established April 26, 1920, following the abdication (in the face of public pressure) of Khivan Khan Sayyid Abdullah on February 2. In 1921, this first issue was released for domestic (intra-republic) postage. The frame, with denomination in both Cyrillic at bottom and Uzbek at top, along with the Uzbek abbreviation for Xorazm Xalq Sho'ro Jumhuriyati, was printed first in carmine (the color here tending toward a magenta), with the central vignette (a sickle and ketmen—a type of hoe—over a cotton branch) added in brown violet. The issue exists on two papers, one slightly thinner and unwatermarked, a later printing on thicker, watermarked paper. Minor differences are to be found on each frame, as the clichés were created individually.

The stamp never saw actual use, as inflation forced postal rates up first to 5000 rubles and then 10,000 rubles—while the stamps were still in production! This has led to little being known about the issue, even in Russian and Soviet philatelic circles. The first mention in the philatelic press came in 1927 and 1928, with the first listing of this stamp coming only in 1973 (!) in a catalogue-price list of A.F. Kolesnikov.

Very Fine, without gum as issued.

Perhaps the holy grail of Russian Civil War philately.
