In 1865, Chicago publisher Alfred L. Sewell, enlisted an "army" of children to raise money for the United States Sanitary Commission and the upcoming Great Sanitary Fair. The children were to sell pictures of Old Abe, a bald eagle that was formerly the mascot of 8th Wisconsin Regiment. Children would achieve "ranks" based on the number of pictures they sold. Thousands of children joined Sewell's "army" and raised $16,000 (against Sewell's original goal or $2,000).
