Walter Lowrie, 23 Centre St. corner of Reed, New York U.S.A." with blue "Baltimore MD Apr. 5" circular datestamp where the cover entered the mails, plus "SHIP" handstamp and blue "39" manuscript marking, Very Fine.


Born in Goshen, New York, in 1813, Robert W. Sawyer worked as a farmer and school teacher before entering the College of New Jersey in the fall of 1834…Graduating in 1838, he immediately entered the Princeton Theological Seminary, where he continued his studies for another three years… When his seminary classmate Jonathan Alward died in 1841 attempting to establish a Presbyterian mission near Liberia, Sawyer volunteered to take his place, and he soon set off for Liberia with his new wife on Oct. 6, arriving in Monrovia in December. Sawyer died 2 years later on December 1, 1843, probably of malaria or mercury poisoning from frequent use of something called "Blue Pill" (most likely calomel; used in order to stave off disease; for more info, see https://slavery.princeton.edu/stories/princeton-and-liberia.

797 cover 1852 image1852 Stampless Folded Letter, Harper Liberia, Republic of Maryland Period, 3 page letter datelined "Harper, Cape Palmas, April 7th 1852" written by a James Cox to William Millerick in Frederick City MD (USA), letter reads in part "I am at present in the Agency's employment where I have been for the last three months…I can say for a trouth (sic) this, the I stay in this Colony the better I like it." He goes on to discuss the conditions including the "african fever" (probably malaria) which killed two members of his "expedition" but apparently was worse for the earlier settlers; he also discusses the animals who live there and his observations of their behavior, making this a very interesting read, cover with "SHIP" and "7" and "Baltimore MD Jul. 1" transit datestamp on front, when folded into a cover, the exterior is toned, otherwise Very Fine and interesting content, The Republic of Maryland was a country in West Africa that existed from 1834 to 1857, when it was merged into what is now Liberia. The area was first settled in 1834 by freed African-American slaves and freeborn African Americans primarily from the U.S. state of Maryland. The first area to be settled was Cape Palmas, in 1834, somewhat south of the rest of the American colony. (Image) (Image2)
