529 cover worcester a 1 image1847, 5¢ red brown, a True Piece of Massachusetts Postal History (Scott 1), stamp with large to full margins top and left, close to just into bottom and right, red 7-bar grid cancel, with matching red "Worcester Ms. Dec. 9" circular datestamp, on folded letter datelined "Worcester Dec. 7, 1850" and addressed to "Hon. George N. Briggs, Pittsfield MA", with interesting content -- "It may be proper for me to add to what was said when I saw you two weeks ago, that I have seen quite a number of gentlemen interested in the matter of the vacancy in the Court of Common Pleas, and believe that the appointment of Judge Merrick would be favorably received. So far as the Whigs are concerned, I do not find that the political bearings of the matter would be regarded as worthy of any attention. -- Very Respectfully & truly & your friend & obedient servant, E.R. Hoar"; file fold thru stamp, still a Very Fine folded letter with great content, You can read about the writer, Ebenezer R. Hoar, who was a member of the Whigs and left in 1848 to help found the Free Soil Party (later merged with the Republican Party), and later served as President Ulysses Grant's Attorney General and main advisor including recommending the 2 Supreme Court justices that increased the Supreme Court from 7 to the current 9 members), and the subject of the letter, Judge Pliny Merrick, who served as Worcester County's district attorney from 1824 to 1843, when he quit to become a judge of the Massachusetts Courts of Common Pleas, which he resigned in 1848 to be the senior defense counsel in the trial of Harvard University Professor John White Webster, accused of murdering Harvard patron Dr. George Parkman, after the trial, and the recommendation of the very influential Hoar (who wrote this letter to Briggs in Dec. 1850 from Worcester (probably where he was visiting Merrick), Merrick was reappointed in 1851, and the recipient, George N. Briggs, who was a member of Congress when he received this letter, on their wikipedia pages. (Image)

542 cover worcester fancy cancels image"N S" North-South Shaking Hands, Positive Version, incredibly perfect strikes of both this rare and extremely popular fancy cancel and the adjacent "Worcester, Mass. 7 05 81 8AM" Time-on-the-Bottom Wesson patent cancel (see Cole page 49), with the former canceling the indicia of the 3¢ postal stationery entire (Scott U82), Worcester Mass. printed corner card and addressed to Mt. Pleasant Iowa with receiving backstamp, reduced at right and small strips of scotch tape at top and bottom edges -- all faults are very clear of the design and address and do not detract from what is unquestionably the finest strike of this cancel, which seldom appears on the market, an absolutely Superb strike, The Positive version is far rarer than the Negative version.

Beal S" in circle, bold strike cancels nearly pristine 1c Black on Buff, Postal Card (Scott UX5), circular datestamp alongside, addressed to the sender's brother in Winchendon Mass., card datelined "Hubbardston Aug. 10, 1888" with messages that the writer and their father were on the heels of a thief who stole their harnesses, Very Fine strike, F.L. Beals was the agent at Jeffersonville on the Winchester & Worcester Railroad and is one of the few route agents to use his name on a fancy cancel. This is the only example we could find. There is a second similar but different Beals cancel (with the word "South" instead of "S") that ties a 3¢ Banknote to a cover. It is noteworthy that both that cover and this card have only a small part of the circular datestamp., This cancel is an extreme rarity. (Image)
