649 F 40L1 imageCity Despatch Post, 1842, 3¢ black on grayish, Sperati Forgery (Scott 40L1), signed on the back by Sperati, this exceptional fake features full to large margins with intact frameline at right tied by red framed "FREE" cancel with part of red City Despatch Post N.Y. double rimmed double circle datestamp, Very Fine, Jean de Sperati used a special photo-lithography technique to produce fakes that are nearly identical of genuine stamps. Volume I of The Lyons Identifier labels the Sperati fakes as "Forgery Type D" and lists 9 subtle ways where Sperati's forgeries differ from the genuine stamps (pp. 358-59).
