809 cover Virginia STRIBLING SPRINGS image[Virginia] STRIBLING SPRINGS Va., light Sep 23 (1861) c.d.s. with a manuscript "Paid 10" on a folded letter from C.S.A. soldier, Whiteford Russell, to his wife in Augusta, Ga.; slight internal splitting, Fine.

In the marvelous, well-written letter, datelined Stribling Springs, Sept. 23rd, 1861, Russell writes "…from all appearances we will do nothing this fall = the Army of the Potomac may intend to surprise and capture Baltimore while they hold Washington City in a state of alarm = the Army of the Mississippi seems to be 'retreating and advancing, marching and counter-marching' and gaining nothing and losing nothing. A head much wiser than mine must untie the 'Gordian Knot" that seems pregnant with a nations fate" and "I cannot, here in this dreary God-forsaken country - realize that I am fighting for home - that my efforts are to free my own native state from the dominion of the enemy - the people here sympathise but little with us - lend us little aid - we are freeing a people who don't want to be free - were it not for the principle at stake the whole country might go to thunder."
