Deltiology (Picture Post Cards)

United States
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
111   imageA Treat of Halloween Picture Post Cards, A spectacular nine-volume collection of approximately 1,800 Halloween postcards, the finest we have had the honor to offer: one volume contains hand-drawn, real photo (with one that seems to show KKK costumes), Blacks, novelties, advertising and expos cards; the other eight volumes are organized alphabetically by manufacturer according to the 2003 Halloween Postcards catalogue (included); there are fine showings of the three main artists (Frances Brundage (by Sam Gabriel), Ellen Clapsaddle (by International Art Co.) and R. Schmucker (by Winsch), with minimal duplication in the albums showing variant backs and/or inscriptions (in addition there is a group of about 400 duplicates separated from the albums); flip through the pages of these albums and you will appreciate the fine work and overall quality of design and condition; Fine-Superb. 112   imageImpressive Collection of Ellen H. Clapsaddle Holiday Postcards, these roughly 2,200 postcards highlight her art in all its manifestations, covering all the major (and a few minor) holidays, with strength in New Year's Eve, Valentine's Day, Easter and Christmas and somewhat smaller holdings of St. Patrick's Day, Memorial (Decoration) Day, Halloween and Thanksgiving; must be viewed to understand their importance in the history of American postcards; some signed, some not, per her custom; Very Fine, ex Lippman.

Shipping charges apply - weight 50.4 lbs.
Clapsaddle was perhaps the most prolific and, for a time, most popular, illustrator of greeting postcards. She was, indeed, the only artist to specialize in this small format. Her designs were beautifully wrought and wonderfully printed, mostly by the International Art Publishing Company, but also by Wolf Advertising Company. Several other publishers issued them under license both in the U.S. and Europe.
