Stephens (1812-83), Vice President of the Confederate States, Jul 1868 cover addressed to Reverse: at Crawfordsville, Ga. and forwarded to Atlanta; franked with a grilled 3¢ rose tied by a quartered cork cancel alongside a Leesburg, Va. c.d.s.; then marked manuscript "Forwarded" with a Crawfordsville c.d.s.; detailed docketing on back, in Stephens' hand, in which he makes reference to his book, A Constitutional View of the Late War Between the States, which had recently been published. The book evoked criticism from both Southern & Northem readers. The docketing reads reads: "Douglas Tyler, Leesburg, London Co., Va., July 1st 1868. Asking an explanation of the argument used on 34 page of the War between the States". minor flap tears, F-VF., ex- Lippman. (Image) (Image2)

Harris, Lt Col of Engrs" to his wife in Thompsons X Roads, Va.; franked with a pair of 10¢ blue type I (11) tied by a neat "Charleston S.C., Jul 31, 62" c.d.s.; back faults and top edge slightly repaired, Very Fine appearance, ex Lippman.


David Bullock Harris served as an engineer, mostly under the command of General Beauregard. Harris planned and constructed the defenses of Centreville, Virginia, Fort Pillow, Island Number Ten, Vicksburg, Mississippi, Charleston, South Carolina, and Petersburg, Virginia. He was commissioned Brigadier General shortly before his death from yellow fever on October 10, 1864.

Poole, New Orleans Commission Merchant and "Agent for the Charleston & Savannah Line of Packets", and MS-6; the three unlisted designs are two variations of the S.C. Palmetto Flag, and a Confederate Shield/Coat of Arms with inscriptions "Southern Rights" & "Death Before Dishonor" and the slogan "Bold, But Wary."; other than the Poole advertising cover, which is badly stained, everything is generally clean and Very Fine, ex Lippman.
