Louisiana New Orleans |
Description of the 1849 New Orleans Cholera Epidemic, long 3+ page letter datelined Sept. 9th 1849 that reads in part
"The last winter & spring has been one that will not be soon forgotten by the inhabitants of New Orleans, I can assure you. The ravages of the cholera has been dreadful beyond description. The first case of the cholera that was reported here
was a merchant that lived nearly opposite of us at Annunciation Street. He was taken in the night and died before morning. From that day, it spread in all directions and parts of the city. It was very uncertain if you went to bed well whether you
would ever leave the bed without help or not. Ellen took it in the afternoon and was half dead before dark but the Doctor stayed with me all night about midnight was able to bring about a reaction and then she (was able) to recover. But (she) has not
fairly got over it yet & I fear never will. Byt the time she was able to sit up in the bed, Josephine took it. She soon got relief & soon got well and then Isabella was taken with the ship fever & was for about eight days that I saw that we expected
her to die any moment. But thank God she recovered and it is now one of the finest and smartest girls of her age in N.O. at least I think so. The Coley raged here for about one month and then it appeared to disappear for about one month and then it
(came back) again. (It) was then the nigger man that I had was taken Saturday about 4 o'clock & died Sunday morning at 10 o'clock. He was a strong healthy man. He could not have died much sooner if his throat had been cut…Mr. Steward lost
five valuable niggers in one week. He got frightened & left the city and took the rest of his niggers with him or I believe he would have lost the whole of them…", Very Fine, ex-Lippman. (Image) (Image2)

and gaining nothing and losing nothing. A head much wiser than mine must untie the 'Gordian Knot" that seems pregnant with a nations fate" and "I cannot, here in this dreary God-forsaken country - realize that I am fighting for home - that my efforts
are to free my own native state from the dominion of the enemy - the people here sympathise but little with us - lend us little aid - we are freeing a people who don't want to be free - were it not for the principle at stake the whole country might
go to thunder." . (Image)
