Egypt
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
2242   imageEgypt, Postal History Accumulation, ca. 1850s-1960s, About 400 covers, postal stationery items, and postcards. About half are Airmail covers with multiple frankings from the 1958-60's UAR period sent to Switzerland, Germany, Italy and the UK. Almost all have circular censorship markings and there are a few (3) First Day Covers. There are about 115 postcards, of which 85 are unused and from the 1930s-40s with a "Souvenir of Egypt' of sepia images of Arab women and Bedouins. Some of the used cards have PORT-SAID and PAQUEBOT cancels. The rest of the material can be described as being from three groups: The first group is about 15 Sphinx postal cards and covers from the early 1900s sent mostly to Europe. The second group is about 85 pre-UAR (1958) mostly Airmail covers from the 1950s with an occasional WWI censored item. Almost all are Airmails, censored, with multiple frankings and sent to European countries as well as Australia. The third group is made up of 18 stampless and is the most interesting. This group appears to be an original shipping correspondence sent to Alexandria in the mid-1850s. It includes six POSTA EUROPEA CAIRO oval frankings (3 blue and 3 black), two folded letter sheets from Bolacco, Italy, with contents in Arabic, three folded letter sheets from Livorno, one folded letter from Cairo, three from Afte, Egypt, and two disinfected items, one from Livorno with a boxed Livorno disinfection mark (little ratty and toned) and the other with disinfection slits from Alexandria to Malta with a 'PURIFIE AL LAZARET' disinfection marking. All the folded letters have considerable content. Condition is Fine to Very Fine with an occasional beat-up item; a few postcards without stamps, otherwise generally in good shape. Much of value here for the knowledgeable person who knows just how much in demand this material is. Shipping charges apply - weight 4 lbs. (Image) (Image2)
