1138   image1893 Columbian Exposition. Unmarked sterling silver (59 x 33mm). Designed as an envelope (gold washed inside) with applied Uncle Sam embossed "stamp" at upper right with text "Will Not Permit." The embossed "postmark" is from Chicago and dated on the Fair’s Dedication Day, "Oct 21st 9AM 92." Due to construction delays, it would be six months before the Fair would open to the public. The hand engraving reads "W.F. Souvenir, Chicago, Ill." It is likely that this rare pre-opening piece was given or sold to those who were invited to attend the Dedication Day ceremony.
