LotNo. Symbol Lot Description Estimate in AU$'s
1475 c image1847 (July 10) entire headed "Jerry's Plains/Hunter River" & signed "Joseph J Harpur", to Melbourne with good strikes of the rare boxed 'JERRYS PLAINS/FREE' handstamp (of a pattern unrecorded in the Handbook) & 'JERRYS PLAINS/NEW.S.WALES' backstamp, the word 'FREE' crossed-through & the letter rated "1/7" being 4d for coastal steamer to Sydney + 1/3d from there by sea, 'MELBOURNE/PORT PHILLIP' arrival backstamp. PO opened 1.1.1837. [It appears that the office used the 'FREE' marking in lieu of an undated town marking - unrecorded for this office - & crossed-out the offending word. Ex Moya Land - sold at our auction of 20.7.2002 for $1188 (Sale 97 Lot 947) - and Brian Peace: sold for $2185 (Sale 148 Lot 1119). Born on the Hawkesbury, Joseph Jehoshaphat Harpur was active in the radical movements of the 1840s. In the letter, he lays claim to the estate of his late brother John Mileham Harpur, the poundkeeper at Sunday Creek (Shepparton). Another brother, Charles Harpur, is known as "Australia's first poet". (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4) (Image5)

1477 c image1848 outer to the Colonial Secretary at Sydney with rare postmaster's endorsement "Scone/Feb 2 48" at upper-right in lieu of the Scone datestamp, fine strike of the rare rounded-boxed 'SCONE/FREE' handstamp in red, GPO arrival backstamp, minor defects. Sold at our auction of 8.11.2013 for $1690 (Sale 185 Lot 288). The early datestamps had the year fixed. Each December, the implements were sent to Sydney to have the new year inserted. Mail handled in this period was serviced with manuscript endorsements, all of which are very scarce to rare. This is an unusually late example of such usage, and the only such endorsement we have seen in combination with a 'FREE' handstamp. (Image1) (Image2)
