1911 Stamp Design Competition Kihn Brothers Bank Note Co (New York) 'COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA/1s ONE SHILLING 1s' handpainted
pen-&-ink essay in bottle green & China white (80x102mm) with a central Map of Australasia and allegorical figures at upper-left - with an emu - and at upper-right - with a kangaroo - on thin card (158x210mm), plus two circular alternative vignettes
of the new Coat of Arms or an eagle (as illustrated in the ACSC) attached by pieces of linen tape ACSC E75, with stamp-size photographic reductions of the Map and Eagle designs (not mentioned in the ACSC) affixed below the artwork, Cat $7500.
Beautiful and superb. Ex 'Chartwell'. Offered together with a photograph (158x104mm) of Major Thomas Mitchell's lithograph 'Australian Eagle', that appears to have been the model for Kihn's staff artist Adolph Glass' rendering of the Eagle vignette.
The majority of the 1051 submissions for the competition were uninspired, poorly executed &/or of no artistic merit whatsoever. The eight Kihn Brothers designs were among the most professionally executed but were unacceptable because they were not
from an Australian or British entrant. The ACSC states that the series of Kihn essays "are mounted in a bound volume ..." However, in the 'Chartwell' sale, they were offered separately, and sold in line with very low estimates. The similar Kihn
Brothers 10/- essay - with only one alternate vignette - sold at our auction of 10.11.2022 for $10,620 (Sale 249 Lot 2064). (Image1) (Image2)

1d Red Die I with 3½mm Wide Almost Horizontal Band of Colour From the Left to the Right Frame, neat 1913 cds impinges slightly on
the variety. Unlisted in the ACSC and by Greg Pope and not previously seen by us. This variety is similar to the vertical band of colour listed for the Die II Plate F 1d ACSC 3(F)j, Cat $750. In both cases, the affected area is 'behind' the map. We
suggest both varieties were caused by inconsistent makeready between the printing plate and the sheet of paper. (Image1) (Image2)
