1957 social usage of Australian Territories formular aerogramme ACSC FA3 with the lengthy letter headed "Bali towards Cocos
Is/November 3rd 1957" and with anticipated address "PP Riley/Brigantine Yankee/ GPO/Mombasa Kenya", to Michigan USA with Australia QEII 4d & Kookaburra 6d tied by 'COCOS (KEELING) ISLANDS/INDIAN/ 1 6NO57 1 /OCEAN/AUST' cds, superb
'FENTON/NOV12/1957/MICH' arrival backstamp & redirected to "Eastern Michigan College", opened a little roughly at the top clear of the stamps & datestamp. A great rarity of the Australian Territories: the ACSC lists but does not price philatelic
usage from Christmas or Nauru, and does not even list philatelic usage from Cocos.
The writer identifies a crew of at least 24 including himself & states: "Today marks the end of the 52nd week aboard...Two days ago...we stopped [at] Christmas Island [where this form would have been purchased] ...there is no mixing of nations...[he
goes on to describe the phosphate mining]...Cocos in a few days from where this shall be mailed". Marvellous. This was the last of four round-the-world cruises by the "Yankee", each taking about 18 months, always with an amateur crew. (Image1) (Image2)
