central unit lightly mounted, the left-hand variety unit very fine unmounted, Cat $17,500+ for the variety mounted. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2012) states "Extremely rare being the only such strip recorded". Ex Julian Sterling (Lot 3); sold in 2014
for $16,470 and Peter O'Rourke (Lot 154); sold in 2020 for $10,575.
The development of the additional flaw early in Third Watermark printings led to the prompt decision to substitute this cliché, and examples of this advanced pre-substitution state are rare: the ACSC states that "Two mint examples are known, one in a
pair, and five used examples". We expect that the reference to a "pair" is an error for this item. This strip is from the Inserted 'CA' Monogram position, but no such Monogram strip is known. The Die IIA Substituted Cliché ACSC 7(1)kb Monogram strip

The ACSC states in footnote 6 that the Substituted Cliché "exists with watermark inverted (price $17500 used) and punctured OS (price $75000 mint, $3750 used)". Applying the same multiplication factor as for Punctured 'OS' produces Cat $350,000 for

scratch that led to the substitution of the unit below, the upper-right unit with a small hinge remainder, two other units in the upper row lightly mounted, the other units including the Monogram corner strip are unmounted, Cat $25,000+ for the
Monogram strip with Substituted Cliché mounted (inexplicably reduced from $30,000 in the 2013 edition; $35,000 in 2017; and $37,500 in the 2021 edition). Ex Stuart Hardy (Lot 248); sold in 2013 for $24,150. Arthur Gray's block of 9 (Lot 411) sold in
2007 for US$25,300.
The ACSC does not give details about the known Monogram pieces which include the Substituted Cliché. To the best of our knowledge, there are only three such pieces recorded: this block, the Arthur Gray block and a complete pane of 60 in the Royal
