£2 black & rose as ACSC 55 (SG 16) but a Sperati Forgery ACSC 55c, genuine Brisbane machine cancel just clear of the distinguishing
charateristics, some short perfs at base with a slightly rounded lower-left corner, signed "Jean de Sperati" in pencil on the reverse, Cat $8500. The only Commonwealth of Australia stamp created by Sperati, and a fine example of this iconic
counterfeit by the master-forger. The two 'Goldmine' examples with machine cancels sold for $4530 and $5010 respectively.
The forgery was created by photo-lithography on genuine paper (obtained by chemically removing the original printing of a low-value stamp while retaining the cancellation). In this case, the stamp used had received a machine cancel, which should not
be found on genuine £2 stamps as these were used primarily for parcels and telegaphic business where they were cancelled with circular datestamps. Also included with this Lot are an enlarged (38x50mm) 'negative image proof' of the Kangaroo with
'SPERATI/REPRODUCTION' handstamp, a photograph of a completed 'proof' which had been signed by Sperati (52x72mm) and seven photographs of examples of the forgeries (one with the Kangaroo missing).
The principal identifier of the forgery is the Scratch from Warrnambool past the Western Coast of Tasmania. In 'Sperati' by the British Philatelic Association (BPA), it is stated at page 31 that this flaw is constant on [Pos L50] of the issued
stamps. This is confirmed by Holbeach at page 52 and page 160, and by the ACSC in footnote 2. However, perversely, the variety on the issued stamp remains unlisted in the ACSC.

£2 black & rose as ACSC 55 (SG 16) but a Sperati Forgery ACSC 55c, well-centred, genuine small-part cds corner cancel just clear of
the distinguishing charateristics, signed "Jean de Sperati" in pencil on the reverse overstruck with 'SPERATI/["43"]/REPRODUCTION' handstamp, Cat $8500. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2008). The only Commonwealth of Australia stamp created by Sperati,
and surely one of the finest examples of this iconic counterfeit by the master-forger.
However, the variety on genuine issued stamp remains unlisted in the ACSC. (Image1) (Image2)

£2 grey & rose ACSC 55C (SG 16) with unlisted Duty Plate variety Scratch from Warrnambool past the Western Coast of Tasmania [Pos
L50], well-centred, commercially used with light but very fine large-part Sydney Registered 1913 cds cancel clear of the variety, Cat $6000+ (£4000+) for normal. This is the cliché used by Jean de Sperati to create his famous forgeries of the £2
Kangaroo: see lots 296 & 297 above. For this reason alone, the variety deserves to be listed in the ACSC. (Image1) (Image2)
