AITUTAKI: 1854 stampless entire letter headed "Aitutaki Nov 9 1854" and signed "Henry Royle Missionary" to the Wesleyan "Mission
House Bishopsgate/.../London" endorsed at lower-left "Per John Williams", then apparently carried per New England whaler with American 'NEW BEDFORD/APR/24/MASS' cds & small 'SHIP' handstamp both in blue, the reverse with 'BOSTON/25/APR/AM PKT' and
British 'AMERICA/ LIVERPOOL/MY8/55' cds, variously rated "22" (cents), "9" (pence) corrected to "8" and "4/1", also with minor docketing intruding on the face & central vertical filing fold. The brief letter requests payment of "the enclosed bills".
Ex Whitney and Richard (Dick) Burge. A great Pacific Islands rarity.
This is believed to be the earliest recorded mail from Aitutaki: see 'The Postage Stamps of New Zealand Volume V: Postal History of the Dependencies" at page 379. The first mission vessel named 'John Williams' was in service between various Pacific
missions between 1844 & 1864, when it was wrecked in the Cook Islands. Rev Henry Royle was in service on Aitutaki from 1839 until 1876. In 1865 he wrote 'The Wreck of the Mission Barque John Williams', on which he & his daughter had been
passengers! (Image1)

CINDERELLAS: 1892 Cake Fair 6d scarlet/orange label, roughly perforated on all sides, no gum as always, paper hinge remainder,
remarkably fine for these fragile items, most of which have significant defects. Gerald Patterson's imperf example sold at our auction of 12.10.2012 for $860 (Sale 176 Lot 251). The printing on orange is believed to be of proof status, a suggestion
supported by this example having lines ruled on all sides in indelible pencil apparently as a guide for the perforating. This is the only perforated example on orange we have recorded. (Image1) (Image2)

remarkably well-centred, no gum as issued, Cat £12,000 for an undivided strip, or £4250 for singles; unpriced as setenant pairs. The pairs were reunited perfectly, leaving no doubt that they had originally been a strip of 4. A great British
Commonwealth rarity, of which very few strips have survived. (Image1) (Image2)
