1852 (late) outer from Great Britain to "Melbourne, Port Phillip" with a very fine complete strike of the larger 'FORWARDED BY/JB
WILCOCKS/SHIPPING & EMIGRATION/AGENT/PLYMOUTH' framed-oval handstamp on the face, carried per favor and placed into the mails on arrival where rated "3"[d] postage due and largely fine 'SHIP LETTER/MA*17/1853/MELBOURNE' in red on the reverse,
ironed-out folds one slightly affecting the handstamp. Plus Wilcocks circular advertising services to migrants to 'the Australian Colonies, Van Dieman's Land, New Zealand, China, Cape of Good Hope, Canada, United States of America, etc, etc ... Agent
to the South Australia Company, the India and Australian Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, etc, etc'. James B Wilcocks was the most successful of seven emigration agents in Plymouth. His efforts, funded by the South Australian government, contributed
to the disproportionately high levels of migration from Devon & Cornwall. The large cachet is much scarcer than the earlier unframed type: see Lots 2392 & 2393 under South Australia.

1853 local entire headed "Mount Gellibrand/24th March 1853" & signed "Beal & Prebeck", addressed to "IS Favier/Clerk of Petty
Sessions/Colac" with Thomas Ham 1d dull red SG 8a (characteristically cut very close at left & top but with good margins at right & base and a fragment of the adjoining unit below), poor Barred Oval '25' & a light but clear crowned-oval
'COLAC/[crown]/MA*25/1853/VICTORIA' backstamp, minor aging & a bit soiled. An extremely rare provincial town letter at the 1d 'drop' rate.
According to John Barwis' Census, only 27 town letters bearing Half-Lengths are recorded. Of these, 25 are from Melbourne. This is stated to be the only provincial town letter in private hands, making this an extremely significant item. It has also
been stated that only one other Barred Oval '25' cover is recorded. Rodney Perry (2006, erroneously states 1851 for 1853), RPSL (2018, wrongly states the stamp is SG 8) & BPA (2020) Certificates. The Perry error has resulted in this item being listed
by John Barwis at page 146 as being from 1851.
Mount Gellibrand is an extinct volcano nearer to Birregurra than Colac, and the site of a sheep station held by Charles Ayrey (aka Airey), who sold the property to his manager, Charles Beal, in 1852. The letter, which is about registration of sheep
brands, must have been carried privately to Colac & posted there. Beal arrived at Port Phillip in March 1839. NB: Lake Colac was officially renamed Colac only on 1.1.1854. However, as proven by this letter, the name "Colac" was in use earlier than
that &, in fact, the 'COLAC' datestamp is recorded from -.1.1852. (Image1) (Image2)

'LEIGH/[crown]/DC*29/1853/VICTORIA' backstamp (LRD) and similar Geelong arrival (affected by part of the flap missing) of the same day. The Leigh PO 1.7.1847; renamed Shelford 1.1.1854; three days after this item was posted. The mis-inscribed 'LEIGH'
datestamp is recorded from 'MY20/1852'. Pencil endorsements "Ex Wise/June 43" and "BDForster" (Bernhard) and Ex Dale Forster. (Image1) (Image2)

cancel and Melbourne crowned oval datestamp with time code 'B' alongside, endorsed "Detained for 6d postage" with a second QV Woodblocks 6d orange (margins in places) added partly across the datestamp tied by another very fine Barred Oval '1' cancel
and a second strike of the Melbourne crowned oval datestamp with time code 'H' applied at lower-left, Launceston '21SP21/1854' cds (Hardinge Primitive (v); rated RRR) transit backstamp and a fine strike of the scarce 'SHIP LETTER INWARDS
FREE/22SP22/1854' rounded-boxed datestamp in red on the face, light filing fold across the stamps and minor repaired edge faults. The Inter-Colonial ship letter rate was 6d per ½oz; this item weighed over ½oz. Sold at our auction of 20.9.2023 for
$1320 (Sale 253 Lot 1577). Ex John Barwis. (Image1) (Image2)

1855 (July 18) cover with Woodblock Imperf 6d (three margins) tied by largely fine Barred Oval '10/V' cancel of 'KILMORE' (partial
crowned-oval backstamp), to "Kalk Bay/Cape of Good Hope" and endorsed "p Lavinia/via Mauritius", backstamps of Melbourne & Cape Town arrival double-strike in red of 'NO11/1855' where rated "8" for an incoming shipletter, very minor blemishes.
A rare destination from Victoria. Ben Palmer's Census lists only ten pre-UPU items to the Cape. Only two are from the 1850s, and this is earlier than both of them, by almost two years. Kalk Bay is about 22km due south of Cape Town. (Image1) (Image2)

1856 (Jan 29) entire letter with Half-Lengths Campbell & Fergusson 1d dull brown-red SG 28c (margins just shaved at left to large;
Cat £200 x2+) & 3d deep blue SG 31c (margins close to large) tied by fine Barred Oval '2' of Geelong, to "FL Walter/Mount Egerton/Ballan", the reverse with oval Melbourne transit of 'JA*30/1856' & fine 'BALLAN/[crown]/JA*31/1855/VICTORIA' arrival.
The 1d SG 28c is rare on cover, only six examples recorded by John Barwis, this being a seventh. The letter, signed "RC Rawlinson" states "...in relation to my brother's quartz claim at Egerton...you will exert yourself to the utmost to delay the
forfeiture..." Ballan (3) PO circa -.9.1853. Mount Egerton is 12km WSW of Ballan. The PO there opened 1.2.1856, the day after this cover was received at Ballan! (Image1) (Image2)

by 'P'-in-oval and unusually very fine 'AUS ENGLAND PER AACHEN/15/8/B/FRANCO' cds all in red on the face, light arrival backstamp of the next day, the stamps unfortunately affixed over the upper edge & creased but still attractive. The rate via
Southampton was 1/2d per ½oz. Not listed in Ben Palmer's Census. (Image1) (Image2)

worn-away), initialled in pencil "AD" (= Alberto Diena). BPA Certificate (2007) incorrectly states that all the stamps are imperforate. The writer had apparently been ordered to vacate his home and states "... I am but a working man ... [with] a
large family ... were I obliged to move it would be the means of inevitable ruin ..." (Image1) (Image2)
