1934-35 VISIT OF THE DUKE OF GLOUCESTER: 1934 plain envelope with light 'OFFICIAL/PAID' cachet in violet and very fine strike of
the 'ROYAL TRAIN/19DE34/NEW ZEALAND' cds being the First Day of Use, to the GPO in Wellington, light spotting; also the enclosure with embossed '[crown]/H' in blue headed "Royal Train.../Hastings/..." which states "This is the first of the
series...We leave the train at Napier and rejoin it at Rotorua later..." and initialled "GHM", very fine. The sender was GH Mackley, General Manager of New Zealand Railways. Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, was the fourth child & third son of King
George V and Queen Mary. In 1945-47, he served as Governor-General of Australia.

the 'ROYAL TRAIN/4JA35 11AM/NEW ZEALAND' cds, to "Commander MH Moyes/HMAS Australia/New Zealand" with fair 'WELLINGTON/NZ/4JA35 715PM/DELIVERY' backstamp. Superb. Plus the matching notepaper dated "Jany 2 35", unfortunately with the message removed.
On 4.1.1935, the train departed Palmerston North at 12.15pm & arrived at Wellington at 7.20pm. HMAS 'Australia' was the de facto Royal Yacht.
