1890-1923 Inwards mail to Lieutenant-Governor Sir William Macgregor comprising 1889 8pp 8vo letter headed 'Museum of
Archaeology/Cambridge' and signed "Anatole von Hugel", no envelope; 1890 (fault on the face) & 1891 covers from 'CAMBRIDGE - 158' apparently both in von Hugel's hand, the first with backstamps of 'PENANG TO SINGAPORE' mail sorter, 'SINGAPORE', Sydney
& 'COOKTOWN/QUEENSLAND', the other with 'BRISBANE/MR10/91' & 'THURSDAY ISLAND/MR20/91'; 1890 3pp 8vo letter asking Macgregor his advice whether it would be safe for the writer to visit!; and 1897 from London with Brisbane & 'PORT
MORESBY/6SE97/BRITISH NEW GUINEA' backstamps, flap removed. A very early and desirable group.

1892 social cover to Sydney with Queensland Lined-Background 2d pair (partly excised) and two fine strikes of the 9-bar 'BNG'
cancel & superb backstamp of the first 'SAMARAI/13FEB92/B. N. G.' cds (with fleurons; Lee #24 ERD), the reverse also with 'COOKTOWN' transit & 'MANLY/FE27/1892/NSW' arrival backstamps, the vice-regal insignia excised from the flap & significant

1905 usage of BNG 2d with manuscript "Tamata/19-10-05" sideways. Ex Ray Kelly & Tim Rybak: sold at our auction of 17.10.2008 for
$299 (Sale 135 Lot 419). Illustrated by Hamilton Croaker in his postmarks monograph where he states "...I have no reason to believe it is otherwise than genuine". Roger Lee states that Ioma replaced Tamata mid-1905 so any mail posted from Tamata

(19.2) and Port Moresby (8.3) with 'KOKODA ND/20MAR09/...' arrival backstamps, held for five months then returned as unclaimed with Two Issue franking of Small 'Papua' ½d x2 & Small 'PAPUA' 4d overlapping & tied by 'KOKODA ND/18JUN09/...' with
further backstamps of Samarai (5.7) & Sydney (12.7) and London arrival of 16AU09, opened-out for display. A remarkable & colourful cover.

1910 large-part internal cover (reduced at left) to merchants at Buna Bay with rare franking of Small 'PAPUA' 1d pair & 6d x2 tied
by 'SAMARAI ED/26JAN10/PAPUA' cds, vertical fold clear of the stamps & minor blemishes. Roger Lee states at page 14 that until 31.10.1912, the internal letter rate was 2d per half-ounce, meaning this article weighed between 3 & 3½oz. This is one of
