1842 lengthy cross-written entire letter dated "Sept 11th, 42" to England with largely fine strike of the rare 'PAID AT/CLARENCE
RIVER' handstamp in red plus a part-strike in 'relief' alongside (the ink apparently not suitable) rated "7"[d] for 4d inland letter plus 3d outgoing ship letter, light 'PAID SHIP LETTER/OC*19/1842/SYDNEY' crowned oval datestamp on the face, London
'18MR18/1843' transit backstamp where rated "8"[d] inland delivery charge and very fine 'NORTHAMPTON' arrival backstamp of the same day, some soiling & blemishes and vertical file fold. Clarence River PO opened 1.10.1840; renamed Grafton circa 1849.
Grafton is some 600kms N of Sydney, it apparently took this item more than a month to travel there (or is the date incorrect?). (Image1)

1851 (Jan 10) envelope to "JM Antill/Jarvisfield/Picton" with superb Sydney Views Plate III 2d ultramarine SG 29 (large even
margins with virtually complete outer framelines on all sides) tied by bars cancel of Sydney (with minor hand-drawn addition at left), the reverse with 'SYDNEY/[crown]/JA*10/1851/NEW SOUTH WALES' cds & poor Picton arrival of the next day (with the
day slugs inverted). A very fine First Issue cover. BPA Certificate (1993). Ben Palmer's #1851.43, illustrated at page 117.
The addressee was John Macquarie Antill Junior. 'Jarvisfield' was his pastoral property, named in honour of Jane Jarvis, first wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, and owned by the Antill family from about 1817 until 1937. The property is now home to
the Antill Park Golf Club. (Image1) (Image2)

1885 (July 9) usage of Postal Card QV 1d pink to Rhein Bayern, Germany with QV De La Rue 2d blue (affixed over edge) & 6d violet
added tied by Sydney duplex cancels, very fine 'NEUSTADT a Hdt./16/8' arrival datestamp on the face, corner bend at lower-left and a few blemishes. A remarkable use of a Postal Card intended for domestic addresses only. There was no concessional
postcard rate to destinations other than Great Britain until after the Colony joined the UPU on 1.10.1891, so the prevailing 9d per ½oz ship letter rate via Brindisi applied. Lengthy personal message including "... received yesterday your letter via
St Francis. I thank you for the money ..." (Image1) (Image2)

1885 (Nov 16) envelope to Germany endorsed "via Naples/Captain KW Resius [?], SMS Marie" with QV Diadems Perf 13 8d orange & De La
Rue 1d rose tied by Sydney duplex cancels, Brindisi '26/DIC/85' transit and Berlin '31 12' arrival backstamps, a couple of minor blemishes. Carried by German warship SMS 'Marie' on her return journey after running aground off New-Mecklenburg, German
New Guinea on 26.12.1884 and spending four months in dry-dock at Sydney being repaired. The voyage was slow as she had to avoid stressing her hull, and this item was transferred en route, arriving in Berlin six weeks before the ship arrived at
Wilhelmhafen. ColinTabeart states that North-German Lloyd ships occassionally carried Australian mail in the period before they began a contract service to Sydney in 1886 (see Vol 2 p310), but does not mention any mail carried by German naval
vessels. (Image1)

1898 (Aug 10) usage of Postal Card 1½d blue to Germany with lengthy personal message in German from a son to his mother, endorsed
"Per SS Polynesian" and posted in the GPO late fee box with QV 2½d purple added tied by Sydney duplex cancel and 'LATE FEE PAID/G.P.O' cachet on the face, 'LUNEBURG/11.9.98' arrival datestamp alongside on the face, light transmission & aging marks.
Postcards with the late fee paid are very scarce, a correctly uprated Postal Card even more so. While the late fee charge for mail addressed within Australia was 1d, that for overseas countries varied with the destination and where it was posted: for
non-Pacific destinations posted in the GPO late fee box, the charge was 2½d per article. (Image1) (Image2)
