1854 (Nov 11) envelope to Leicestershire, England endorsed "Registered" with QV Woodblocks Imperforate 6d orange & Octagonal
Imperforate 1/- blue (both with almost full margins, the latter with some surface faults) tied by slightly untidy Barred Oval '94' cancels (rated R) and fair 'AVOCA/VICTORIA' crowned-oval despatch datestamp at lower-left, Melbourne transit backstamp
where taxed "1/-" in red pencil on the face for under-payment of the 1/- ship letter rate, London '12FE12/1855' transit alongside where rated "1/6d"[d] payable by addressee, minor closed tears on the back flap & some transmission marks. Carried by
P&O steamers 'Norna' to Galle, Ceylon, 'Bombay' to Suez, overland to Alexandria and 'Tagus' to Southampton. On 1.10.1854, the 6d per ½oz Uniform ship letter 'paid to destination' rate was introduced between Great Britain and the Australian Colonies.
However, Victoria had increased its outgoing ship letter rate from 3d to 1/- on 1.5.1854, and did not initially participate in the uniform rate. Great Britain introduced retaliatory rates, and the British PO clerks seem to have treated this item as
wholly unpaid, charging the addressee 6d Uniform ship letter plus 1/- registration fee. Ex Les Molnar - sold at our auction of 7.12.2012 for $368 (Sale 177 Lot 783) and John Barwis. (Image1) (Image2)
